Telders visit

OLT goes Dutch with a visit from Telders Primary School!

The Ouseburn Learning Trust (OLT) had the great privilege earlier this month of hosting staff from Telders Primary Schools, Leiden, Netherlands, as part of a study trip visit to the UK.

Telders Primary School is situated in Leiden, a city in the province of South Holland, equidistance between Amsterdam to the North and Rotterdam to the South.  Telders is part of a 14 Schools Trust called PROOLeiden and as part of a robust ‘internationalisation process’, have started to teach English to all of their pupils.  Telders approached the OLT to request a visit in order to familiarise themselves with the English School system as well as practice their English and learn some Geordie at the same time!  Telders Primary School introduced themselves with a fascinating you tube clip entitled ‘The Difference between Holland and the Netherlands’ which is well worth a watch:  https://youtu.be/eE_IUPInEuc

It was a truly inspirational week, with staff from Telders visiting all 8 Schools in the OLT to share perspectives, different teaching contexts and to learn from one another through international engagement.  The range and depth of learning that took place is difficult to capture in one news snippet, but hopefully the pictures enclosed give a flavour of how teaching staff were able to share best classroom practice.  Babette van Leeuwen, Head of School, and Patrick Geinaert, International Links Co-ordinator at Telders described the week with OLT as ‘an unforgettable experience’ and ‘amazing to build bridges with friends in the UK’.

As part of the visit, OLT were able to introduce our friends to fish, chips and mushy peas at Marshalls at Tynemouth, a new concept to the Dutch palate!  On the last night of the visit, Telders Primary School very kindly hosted a farewell evening at the Ouseburn Cycle Hub.  Many Thanks to Jill and the team at the Ouseburn Cycle Hub for a great evening, and for helping our Dutch friends hire bicycles for their week with us as this was Telders’ preferred method of Transport when travelling to and from OLT Schools.  Our link with Leiden will continue to grow no doubt, as we build on the success of Ravenswood Primary’s Christmas Card project with Telders, the recent Newcastle based study trip and the potential to work on ‘connecting classrooms’ projects for all OLT Schools in the future.
